Why do our problems increase at Christmas time?

christmasPeople work all year long waiting for the end-of-the-year festivities – days of joy, socialization, rest. This is a time we expect to do everything we wanted to do during the year and didn’t. It is the time for us to go on that trip, to be at nice to our children and loved ones, to exercise, to start a diet. This is the time to have “more time for ourselves.”

But when these long awaited days finally arrive we encounter something we weren’t expecting: we don’t know how to use the time constructively. Why is that?

Why do accidents increase nearly 90% at this time of the year on highways in São Paulo? Why does violence also increase, rising to 40 homicide deaths on New Year’s Eve alone in São Paulo? Why is it that people get ill, go to the hospital with all sorts of diseases, gastrointestinal conditions, heart crises, heatstroke, viruses, suicide attempts, depression? Why do people on this planet suffer the most at this time of peace and love, a time when they can enjoy beauty?

I would like to mention Norberto Keppe’s ideas once again. On page one of his book, The Origin of Illness, he says

”As a rule, people are not interested in solving problems, their own or those of society. Instead, they tend to idealize themselves and pretend that the world and other people are as they imagine. In other words, the very people who idealize so greatly are the ones who get involved in all sorts of difficult situations — and because of their excessive envy, they fail to embrace and take advantage of reality, which never ceases to delight people of good will.”

This is to say that problems do not start when something is wrong in our lives or because we work too much or lack something. Contrary to what you might expect, people from the First World, who have everything in terms of material means and conditions compared to people from the Third World, see a dramatic increase in divorces and suicides at this time of the year.

An article in a Brazilian newspaper said that people should ”fight depression by eating fruit, walking and laughing.” I think people know very little about the real causes of our problems, which are, undoubtedly, essentially linked to psychological factors.

The main cause of all this is psychological inversion which causes us to expect our satisfaction and happiness to come from external, sensorial factors, like money, sex, food, travel. But these things will only bring us satisfaction if we feel good inside ourselves first. If we don’t, these things may trigger even more problems.

In this same article, we can read that being relaxed, in a good mood and laughing about ourselves is good. But how can we be relaxed, in a good mood and tolerant with our problems if we don’t have the slightest idea about our envious, arrogant, materialistic and projective actions? We have no idea how much we reject (without perceiving it, of course) all the good we have in our lives. We don’t perceive how we attack for no reason and fight against those who love and help us.

If the human being does not perceive how much he rejects his BEING, he will never be healthy. Health can only exist if we have consciousness of our rejection of BEING and of the divine BEING.

We have immeasurable riches dormant inside us. We put our psychological lives in last position when in fact this aspect is of utmost importance. We have a lot more riches than the material goods we have and the power we enjoy. Our inner lives have incredible power – and if this power is not conscientized so it can be better used, it can turn against us and destroy our psychological, physical, social, economic and affectionate balance.
